Emetophobia is an intense, irrational fear of vomiting or seeing others vomit. It can significantly impact daily life. The main symptoms include both psychological and physical responses, as well as behavioural avoidance. Here’s a breakdown:
Psychological Symptoms:
-
Intense anxiety at the thought of vomiting or being near someone who might vomit
-
Persistent intrusive thoughts or images related to sickness or nausea
-
Catastrophic thinking (e.g. “If I feel sick, I will definitely vomit and lose control”)
-
Constant worry about food safety, hygiene, or catching illness
Physical Symptoms (especially in triggering situations):
-
Nausea
-
Sweating
-
Shaking or trembling
-
Increased heart rate
-
Shortness of breath or dizziness
-
Gastrointestinal discomfort (ironically, this can increase the fear of vomiting

-
Not eating certain foods or eating very little
-
Avoiding restaurants, travel, social events, or alcohol
-
Overuse of antacids or anti-nausea medication
-
Avoiding pregnant people, sick individuals, or children
-

Reassurance seeking, such as:
